The Red Lion

A coaching inn, in quiet detail.

The Brief

A coaching inn, refound on its own terms.

About The Red Lion

A coaching inn in the English countryside, The Red Lion is rooms, a restaurant, and the quiet ritual of arriving somewhere considered. The brief was not to reinvent it, but to photograph it the way it feels at five in the afternoon.

I.
The Challenge

A historic inn whose interiors carried more weight than its imagery did. The visuals had grown polite and platform-led, rooms shot like listings, food shot like menus. The work needed to remind guests of the feeling of staying there.

II.
The Approach

Editorial creative direction, shot on location across the inn. Warm low light, considered styling, restraint over reach. Each frame composed for the rituals, breakfast in bed, an afternoon book, dinner by the window, rather than the rooms in isolation.

III.
The Outcome

A library of editorial imagery that carries the inn into print, social and paid without flattening it. Bookings feel earned, not announced. The pictures look like the place, quiet, English, considered.

The Picture

Photographed for the way it is felt.

"The work isn't to make the inn look bigger than it is. It's to show how it actually moves, the coffee, the curtains, the half-finished book, the bowl of pasta, at the hour when the light is at its best."

The Process

Three movements.

A short, considered engagement, three weeks from brief to delivered library, moving from direction, to on-location shoot, to graded edit.

01, Direct

Set the picture.

Mood, shot list, styling notes, reference imagery. The shoot was scoped before a single frame was taken.

Week 1
02, Shoot

On location, in soft light.

Two days on site, rooms, restaurant, breakfast, in-room rituals, shot in warm low light to keep the inn's own atmosphere.

Week 2
03, Edit

Grade and hand over.

Editorial colour grading, careful selection, and a delivered library structured for print, social and paid use.
